After a lot of research, I been able to enjoy the performance of this box, I recently found a way to watch live tv channels (iptv), that is awesome... and they work great...
it take time to learn ask the possibilities and features of this box, but trust me it's completely worth it, and you can say bye bye cable bills!
Update 1-26-15
I start experiencing buffering problems and the box was also shutting off during streaming, reading in matricom forum the advice was to do a factory reset and download Kodi 14.0 helix from kodi.com instead of using matricom media center.
I wish a had done it from the beginning, I think that's the secret key off this box, that truly improve the performance of this and now work like faster than Roku or fire.
Don't be afraid of doing the factory reset, just go to
Settings- backup and reset-factory reset. Then download Kodi 14 from the browser and you will see the difference, trust me!
Original review
Before I bought this box, I study my options for 2 weeks reading a lot of reviews and watching you tube videos on how to install add-ons. This box was my top pick.I would suggest installing Kodi 1st in an android tablet or cell phone to learn and get familiar with before you buy this. It took me 10 minutes to install add-ons!
I'm very impress with the performance of this box. There is so much to watch for free that I just spent hours searching and testing the available videos add-ons. 75% of them works perfect. Impress by the 1080p capabilities, it looks awesome.
The only cons of this box is the WiFi reception, I call my internet company to increase the speed (up to 50mb) and now is working fine; however I order a cat6 to feed directly from the router, I will update my review once I connected directly from the router to comment about the improvement in speed. How good it's compared to other boxes?, I don't know since this is my first android tv box, but Im also going to buy one gbox mx2 box to compare to this one. Again, I would edit my review once I try other boxes. In the meantime, I would recommend this box to anybody.
Update 1-23-14
I add a 32 gb sdcard with around 12gb of 1080p videos and pictures, the 4k video app crashed few times trying to play this videos, I would try 3rd party app to see how works, I was disappointed on that but honestly the main reason I bought this box out was for Kodi and that works very good!
I also try this box in 2tv's, one 720p and one 1080p. Do not buy this box to connect it to a 720p, it doesn't work right and it's not worth it. In that case buy the previous model Gbox MX2
I'm using logitech k400 keyboard which is pretty good but it has interference with other wireless device at home. Because it use a wireless connection if someone it's using a cellphone next to me,it cause interference and the keyboard doesn't work properly, without cellphones around it works perfect. If you using wireless devices at home I would suggest buying a keyboard with Bluetooth connection
I hope this info can help someone.
This is the Best product I have ever buy from Amazon!
Update 1-24-15
I download a speed test app to compare speed over WiFi connection and hard wired connection...
over WiFi speed was 12mb
With hard wire install it went up to 40mb
Definitely the WiFi reception of this box is no good.. I put my cellphone next to the gboxq to test the speed, both devices connected to the same WiFi and testing with the same app
My phone speed reception it was 3times better than the box
Now the good part;
the box performance is mind blowing if you connect it to a hard wire instead of WiFi, super fast and no buffering problems at all. I'm in love with this box now!
The g-box pretty much works as advertised. It reads any file you throw at it (even WMA lossless), it's fast as all get out (way faster than the Dune), quiet, tiny, and no heat. With Kodi, the interface is great, and scraping metadata is a breeze (in fact you don't have to do anything - Kodi does it all). The scraper fails when you have multiple shows inside a single ISO file, though. And you don't get the BD menus. That said, it has another tragic flaw: HD audio. If you're just going to plug this into your TV's HDMI input, then it's wonderful and I'd give it five stars, but if you're plugging it into an AVR, you'll be disappointed (if you get it to work). First, you have to get it to understand how many speakers your AVR has (2.0, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1, etc). If you get this wrong, every time you try to play a BD iso, it'll crash the box. It took me a while to figure this out, and I was ready to send it back. Be sure to select passthru in Kodi, but it still won't bitstream lossless audio to your AVR. It down converts lossless audio to DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1. Even PCM. But at least it plays the BD and it doesn't crash. This is unacceptable to most home theater junkies, even though we usually can't tell the difference. I'll keep the g-box because it plays everything and has a great interface, but when I find a streamer that will properly handle HD audio, I'm relegating the g-box to the kid's TV.
Another thing that will make it crash will be to turn BD lite menus off. If you turn off lite menus, it'll try to play the Blu-Ray menu and that doesn't work out well - usually it'll just play the menu and jump back to the Kodi screen. Sometimes it just crashes. Turn BD lite menus on in the Kodi setup. Also set it to "Choose" when you click play. That way it'll let you pick which file to play (usually the biggest) in the BD iso file and you can watch your movie.
Other than the above items, it's well worth the money and time spent.
PROs: It plays everything. It runs Kodi in all its glory. It scrapes metadata like a dream. It has a simple IR remote (easy for your universal remote to learn)
CONs: No BD Menus. No HD Audio. Difficult to setup. It has a simple IR remote (no transport functions [FF, Play, Pause, RW] - you have to use on-screen menus). No power button on the unit (when it crashes, you have to unplug it).
