VPNUniversity.com is a passion project nearly a decade in the making. Founded in 2013, we’re committed to spreading the message of digital privacy, transparency & security through our reviews, tutorials and videos.
Our team has thousands of hours of experience testing & reviewing digital security tools such as:
- Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
- Password Managers
- Secure Email services
- Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
- Encryption Tools
- VPN-Ready Wifi Routers
- Open-source router firmware (like AsusWRT-Merlin)
- and more
The internet is constantly evolving, but what’s consistent is the integral role it plays in our daily lives and work. We need privacy solutions to match a society that is extremely online.
As such, we strive to be the trusted experts who can recommend the best tools & techniques to protect and take charge of your privacy. Unfortunately, nobody else is going to do it for you.
If there’s anything we can do to improve this site and serve you better, please contact us. We are always working to grow and improve the site.
Meet the team
Professor V
Founder, Editor-in-chiefProfessor V is an educator by day and privacy-obsessed blogger by night. He tried his first VPN 2010, and has been hooked on privacy tools ever since. He founded this site in order to share his passion and knowledge with the world. His articles have been read in more than 130 countries around the world, by more than 2.5 million readers.
Alex Carter
Contributor, reviewerAlex has been using a VPN since college, and writing about them for half as long. He’s especially fond of their streaming applications, and loves exploring all things Firestick, Kodi, and Netflix. When not writing for VPNUNniversity, he enjoys hiking, teaching Rufus (his labradoodle) new tricks, and fragging fellow humans on his lovely new PS5.
Review Process
Every VPN reviewed on this site has been personally tested buy a team member or contributor (usually Professor V himself). We typically spend a full day using each VPN service, to get a feel for the day-to-day benefits (and limitations) typical users will face.
Beyond that, there is a rigid and structured testing process, to help us better assess each VPNs security, privacy and usability. This allows us to compare each VPN against other industry-leading VPNs in an apples-to-apples format.
Testing Process
Here are the tests we run on every VPN, as well as some subjective criteria we assess:
- Speed Testing: Multiple speed test runs on servers in at least 3 countries (if available) The worst test result for each location is discarded and the remainder are averaged.
- Security Testing: The VPN is tested for DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks using web-based tools like ipleak.net and dnsleaktest.com.
- Privacy Policy: We read the legalese so you don’t have to. Years of experience help us read between the lines to decipher what what these policies do (and don’t say) about their logging practices.
How we make money
This site is 100% reader supported, primarily via affiliate links. In simple terms: we receive commission when you sign up for services or products recommended on this site. It is our goal (and best interest) to match readers to the right tool for their use case. This promotes continued trust from our readers, and makes our brand partners happy as well, because we send them customers whose needs match the capabilities of the product.
We don’t: accept paid placements, sell paid reviews, or do any sort of paid mentions for the products and tools on our site. Simply put, VPN companies cannot pay to be featured on VPNUniversity, nor can they buy favorable reviews. All review methodology and recommendations follow our formal testing process, and rankings are merit-based for each article.
Which VPNs do you have an affiliate relationship with? Not every product featured on VPN University is an affiliate partner, but may of them are. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of some of our affiliate products:
- Cyberghost
- ExpressVPN
- Hide.me
- IPVanish
- NordVPN
- Private Internet Access
- VPN.ac
- VyprVPN
