Best VPNs for Multiple Devices (Most simultaneous connections)

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got multiple internet-connected devices. We’ve got computers, smartphones, tablets, streaming devices (Xbox, Roku) and we’d like to experience VPN security and privacy on all of them.

There’s just one problem…many VPN providers limit you to just 2 or 3 connected devices.

Fortunately, there are several VPN companies that cater to power-users like us. These are the VPNs that allow the most simultaneously connected devices. You won’t have to choose between your laptop and tablet anymore. Protect and connect them all simultaneously.

Criteria:

  1. Must allow at least 5 devices
  2. Mobile compatible (iOS/Android)
  3. Reputable brands with consistent service quality

#1 – NordVPN (Editor’s Choice)

NordVPN simultaneous connections

NordVPN is a heck of a good value (they ranked #2 on our list of the best ‘Cheap’ VPN services). They’ve adopted a strict ‘No-Logs’ policy, are Netflix and BBC iPlayer compatible, and their pricing is quite affordable (our current offer is $5.75/month with a 1-year plan).

Now NordVPN is also an industry-leading provider when it comes to the # of simultaneous VPN connections allowed.

NordVPN allows you to connect 6 devices at once, using any VPN protocol (all with unlimited bandwidth).

NordVPN is a Panama-based corporation (a country with strong privacy laws) and though they are relatively new, they’ve proven to be one of the most innovative and popular VPNs in the world.

Here are some of the top reasons to choose NordVPN:

NordVPN is one of the only VPNs that is still Netflix/Hulu/iPlayer compatible

Netflix and BBC iPlayer are both actively working to block VPN users from accessing their services from other countries, and they’ve succeeded in blocking almost all of the top VPN providers.

NordVPN is one of the few exceptions, and they’ve built some impressive workarounds that allow you to access Netflix and iPlayer simply by connecting to a NordVPN ‘streaming-optimized’ server. In fact, you don’t even have to use a UK server to watch iPlayer. Ex-pats and travelers rejoice, NordVPN is the answer to your streaming needs. And, thanks to their 30-day refund policy, you can try NordVPN risk-free for 30 days.

Zero-Log and Torrent-Friendly

NordVPN has adopted a strict ‘No-Logs’ policy, meaning they don’t log or monitor your VPN activity or web history. They even use private DNS servers to keep your ISP from monitoring your DNS lookups while connected to the VPN.

They’re also a great choice for torrent users, or p2p file-sharing. NordVPN allows torrents in specific p2p-friendly server locations, with no bandwidth restrictions. They even provide SOCKS5 proxy access in every server location. SOCKS5 proxies are extremely useful for added anonymity while torrenting, and are compatible with uTorrent, Vuze, QBittorrent, and most other torrent clients.

#2 – VPN.ac (6 devices)

VPN.ac Simultaneous connections/devicesVPN.ac is a security-first VPN provider. From my experience with their team and VPN software, it’s clear that security and privacy are their top priority. Read our VPN.ac review for full analysis and speedtests.

VPN.ac allows 6 simultaneously connected devices (same as NordVPN).

They also have a fully featured desktop client (Windows/Mac) and an OpenVPN-capable Android app.

Our favorite features are:

  • Adjustable encryption strength/protocol/algorithm
  • Rock-solid, stable software
  • Fast speeds, unlimited bandwidth
  • Transparent, honest logging policy (No activity logs, 1 day metadata retention).
  • Torrent-friendly
  • Netflix-compatible

Based in Romania, VPN.ac is a solid choice for all VPN uses. They allow torrenting/p2p on all servers, and do not discriminate against any program, VPN usage, or protocol.

They’re also one of the few VPNs (like NordVPN) that is actively working to remain Netflix compatible, and VPN.ac indeed worked with Netflix USA in our testing. It also works great with BBC iPlayer on-demand or streaming.

Read our VPNac review for further details on their security features like: IP-leak prevention, Encrypted DNS, and Logging Policy.

Better yet, take VPN.ac for a spin and take advantage of their 7-day refund policy to test their service for a full week. We recommend their 1-year subscription as the best deal, which comes to $4.93/month with unlimited speeds/bandwidth.

#3 – IPVanish (Editor’s Choice, 5 Devices)

We’re proud to add IPVanish to this list, and it’s due in part to this website and our audience. The IPVanish team asked me to list the areas where IPVanish could improve the most, and their restrictions on using multiple devices at once was near the top of my list. They heard the critique, fast-tracked the update, and within 3 weeks increased the number of simultaneous devices allowed from 2 to 5 (a 150% increase!).

IPVanish is easily one of the fastest VPNs in the world (quite possibly the Fastest), and now they’re proving to be one of the most responsive to customer input as well.

IPVanish is a non-logging VPN provider, and they allow all popular VPN uses including Torrents/P2P, Skype, Tor, and streaming.

If you want the fastest VPN service possible (and support for 5 devices at once), choose IPVanish. Period.

#4 – Private Internet Access (Editor’s Choice, 5 Devices)

Private Internet Access (Read our full PIA Review) is arguably the most popular paid VPN service in the world, and with good reason.

They aren’t flashy, and their software is relatively simple, but they do all the important things right. (And you get to enjoy their network with up to 5 devices connected at once).

It’s also DD-WRT, Tomato, and ASUSWRT router compatible, meaning you can run PIA’s VPN on a compatible router and protect your entire network while using only a single VPN connection.

Here’s why we love PIA (and it’s the #1 choice among our readers):

  • At $3.33/month, the price is almost unbeatable
  • They’re a true ‘Zero-Logs’ VPN provider
  • Unlimited speeds, transfer, and bandwidth
  • Triple IP-leak protection (DNS, IPv6, Kill-switch)
  • Anonymous payments via Bitcoin or Giftcards
  • 5 Simultaneous connections allowed
  • Torrent/P2P-friendly (And included SOCKS5 proxy works with Vuze & uTorrent)

#5 – PureVPN (5 devices)

PureVPN, who also made our list of the Cheapest VPN Services, allows a generous 5 simultaneous connections/devices per account.

Based in Hong Kong, PureVPN is a great choice for users based in China (due to the high number of Asian servers) but they’re also a top choice for users in North America and Europe. They allow torrents, have streaming-optimized servers (for accessing geo-blocked streaming sites), and have a ton of extra features built into their software.

Reasons to pick PureVPN:

  • ‘Split-Tunneling’ feature lets you route specific apps inside/outside VPN
  • Kill-switch, DNS Leak protection
  • Free NAT Firewall included with 1-year plans
  • Torrents/p2p Allowed (on designated server locations)
  • Priced under $5/month with 1 year subscription

Which VPNs allow the fewest connections/devices

Many VPN providers aren’t nearly as generous as those listed above. If you’re a power-user and you want a provider that offers at least 3 simultaneous connections per account, you’ll probably want to avoid the providers listed below.

ProxVPN (1 connection)

ProXPN only allows one device per account. On the plus side, they do have a free Plan.

Witopia (1 connection)

Witopia only allows a single device per account (and they have no mobile app)

BolehVPN (2 devices)

BolehVPN allows 2 connections/devices per account.

HideMyAss (2 devices)

Despite their popularity and massive # of servers, Hidemyass only allows simultaneous connections per account.

Ipredator (2 devices)

This Swedish VPN allows 2 simultaneous connections per account.

How to connect unlimited devices on a VPN account

Even if your VPN provider restricts you to a low number of simultaneous connections, you can still connect an unlimited number of devices to the VPN tunnel while on your home network by using a VPN-capable wifi router.

This router can connect directly to a VPN server, and route all your devices through the same VPN tunnel, while using only a single VPN connection. You can even connect devices that don’t have built-in VPN support, such as Chromecast, FireTV, AppleTV, Xbox, and Playstation devices.

In order to set up a VPN router connection, you need two things

  1. A high-end router capable of handling VPN traffic (They start around $90)
  2. Special Firmware (Router operating system) with VPN support

There are several 3rd-party router firmware platforms (DD-WRT and TomatoUSB are the two most popular) that include OpenVPN support, but they require you to manually ‘flash’ them onto your router hardward, and there is a small risk of ‘bricking’ your router (causing it to be non-functional).

That’s why we recommend ASUS’s line of VPN-capable routers, which come preinstalled with the ASUSWRT firmware, which includes OpenVPN support right out of the box (no flashing required). We even have a full-guide, showing you how to set up OpenVPN on ASUS routers. It takes just a few minutes, and works with almost any VPN provider.

Summary and Conclusion

Even if you’re a power user, there are several VPN providers capable of handling your device load. Few users will ever need more than 3 VPN connections at once, but many providers are now offering 5 or more simultaneous connections. This is enough devices that you could even share an account with a trusted friend (or two) and split the cost.

Recommended Providers

Our top picks from this list would definitely include Private Internet Access and VPN.ac (who both happen to have a top overall review ranking on this website). Both have a reputation for quality, privacy, and security. They’re also net-neutral (they don’t discriminate against certain network uses like filesharing) and both cost less than $5/month with a 1-year subscription.

  1. Already got PIa installed on my tablet (ATT Uverse) and now I’d like to have VPN on my zte quartz Android phone. I am not that tech savvy and have no idea how to activate on my phone or Kodi box. Can you point me in the right direction as the tutorials on PIa site are evidently for those above my pay grade!!

    • There’s no need to activate the app on each device you install it on. Just sign into your account in the App (username+password) and click connect. There is no limit to the number of total devices you can install the PIA app on. They just limit you to 5 active connections at once.
